Dr. Barrett’s Biography
Stephen J. Barrett, DMD is a caring, creative, and patient-centered dentist who brings a thoughtful, down-to-earth approach to every visit. Inspired early on by parents who both worked as dental hygienists, he grew up seeing the impact that compassionate dental care can have. Dentistry felt like a natural path, one that allowed him to work with his hands while making a meaningful difference in people’s health.
Before joining Willamette Dental, Dr. Barrett practiced in a public health clinic that hosted students from OHSU and ASDOH. Guiding new dentists entering the profession became one of the most rewarding parts of his career. He is proud of the growth he experienced there, believing that teaching others sharpens one’s own skills and deepens empathy.
Dr. Barrett chose Willamette Dental for its strong sense of community and its commitment to patient-first care—values that mirror the way he has always practiced. He understands that many patients need extra compassion, and he meets that need through listening closely, collaborating, and creating an environment where people feel heard rather than hurried.
On weekends, you’ll likely find him enjoying a round of golf or watching auto races at Portland International Raceway.

Stephen Barrett was absolutely the best, I am very scared going to the dentist, it is the worse time when I do, he explained everything from start to finish, made me actually relax and the treatment was completed in no time at all, I was treated great from making the appointment to walking out the door. I have not always had the experience I did with Dr Barrett, it was greatly appreciated and I will refer others Willamette Dental using my own experience. Thanks for changing my attitude!

When I'm at the dentist everyone is Great! But, with one dentist it was hard to get in at a timely manner and I was going to change dentist. Now I see their is a second dentist there and I'm hoping it doesn't go down to one dentist again.

Great follow-up after having sensitivity issues after a crown restructuring. Dentist quickly addressed the issue and reshaped the crown with multiple checks to ensure the issue should be resolved without having to redo the entire procedure. The hygienist was very knowledgeable and added information about why I was experiencing discomfort and personal history with filling recovery. Will definitely request both of them for my next visit.

Overall, my experience was excellent. The doctor is very professional, attentive, and clearly knowledgeable. I felt I was in good hands throughout the appointment. That said, I did notice that the doctor moved around quite a bit while speaking, which made it a bit hard for me to stay focused and feel fully at ease. Aside from that, the service was outstanding, and I would definitely come back.
